History of the food sourcing/production in Hawaii: Food sourcing/ production has evolved immensely throughout the years. In ancient Hawaii our ancestors traveled and migrated here to the hawaiian islands. They were a sustainable civilization that had advanced agriculture. They were polynesian voyagers who brought with them, plants and animals.Their agriculture systems consisted of water irrigation, fishponds, and kalo patches. In 1778 Hawaiians and europeans voyagers made contact for the first time. In their meeting they exchanged different plants and materials. In ancient Hawaii some of the products that were traded and sold was ʻawa and sugarcane. Farming became a huge part of hawaiiʻs food production. Rice fields on the island of Kauai. Pineapple and sugarcane on the island of Hawaii. With these plantations it brought many immigrants from Japan, Philippines, China, Portugal and Puerto Rico. Carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen cycles are important factors in healthy cycles. Carbon Cycle is broken down into dependent smaller sub-cycles which are respiration and photosynthesis. Respiration is when carbohydrates are consumed by animals, fauna, oxygen, water, energy, and output carbon. Photosynthesis in a carbon cycle is when plants absorb energy from the sun to produce its own carbohydrates and oxygen. The Nitrogen Cycle is a way converted by nitrates in two different ways. One way is lightning, a form of nitrogen that plants can use; and nitrogen is fixing bacteria by special enzymes when nitrogen is converted to nitrates.Systems are very important. Who we are as people is based on systems in our lives, in society, in the way the world works. The circle of life is a system we all know. Everything that lives must die. We must got through the school education system. The system of traffic lights. Systems run our lives. Food Journal:
In my food journal Iʻve realized a lot about my eating habits. First, I really do have expensive taste. Majority of my foods were japanese foods such as sushi and fish, I eat a lot of acai bowls, and a lot of pasta. The majority of my food that I eat is processed. I also realized that a lot of foods that I thought were locally sourced, arenʻt. Majority of the fresh poke, and sushi I eat are actually shipped in from somewhere else. Also the majority of my food is not organic. This is shocking to me because when I do eat fresh fruit or vegetables they are organic but it gets thrown into a meal that is not mostly organic and is processed.
We as the lahui of hawaii can do a lot more to be responsible of our food production. We can start in our own families. We can grow some veggies or fruit in our yards. If we canʻt do that we can go to more farmers market where we buy organic locally sourced food while supporting our local farmers.
Growing System: My group has been assigned an aquaponic system. An aquaponic combines conventional aquaculture; ours is koi fish in tanks; cultivating plants in water in a symbiotic environment. We are currently growing, kalo, lettuce, and green onion.
Food Growth After 2 Weeks:
JANUARY 9: There is an abundance of green onion and 2 eggplants that are growing.
JANUARY 14: The green onion is growing. We added more kale, and the lettuce is growing.
JANUARY 18TH: We harvest 2 eggplants. They both were overripe and didnʻt taste well.
JANUARY 29: There was a fish that died and the kalo is getting bigger.
FEBRUARY 21 2019: Took home the kale and planted it in the yard. Harvested one eggplant today.
